Most patent tools are designed to work well with Boolean queries. You string together keywords and operators, run a search, and get a huge set of results. Then you download the data and comb through it in Excel. This process is grossly ineffective, yet it's the norm.
Frustrations with searching
The result is that 70–80% of searchers' time is spent discarding irrelevant results. Generic tools try to be a catch-all: they do a little bit of everything and end up doing nothing especially well. Finding the right prior art stays hard. Time and money slip away.
It's not just professionals who feel this. Independent inventors describe the same frustration: results that feel either overwhelming or incomplete, patent language that doesn't match how anyone actually describes their invention, and after hours of searching no real confidence that they didn't miss something.
The advice they get? Either learn to think in patent jargon: translating your idea into classification codes, Boolean strings, and synonym chains, or hire a skilled professional to do it for you at hundreds or thousands of dollars per search. Either way, someone is still combing through results by hand.
How do the current tools compare?
A recent independent benchmark published in BASES (no. 443) confirms this isn't a skill problem, it's a tooling problem. François Libmann tested 14 AI-powered patent search tools on the same simple query and manually verified every result. The best tool managed a 47% relevance rate. The worst hit 7%. More telling: combining all 14 tools surfaced 68 relevant patent families, while a carefully constructed Boolean strategy found 41 . Only 33 overlapped. Neither approach alone was sufficient. That's the state of the art. Even in 2025, no single tool, Boolean or AI, reliably gets you to the prior art that matters.
Strata IP's approach
Strata IP solves this by reimagining the search process. We stack information in layers so retrieval is targeted from the start. You spend less time filtering noise and more time on the patents that actually matter. Our early benchmarks show significant accuracy improvements of over versus traditional search.
If you're tired of Boolean-and-Excel workflows and want to see a different approach, we'd be glad to work with you. We built Strata IP for searchers, and we're eager to get feedback from people who run these searches every day.
